Intuitive Painting Vision Quest

This luna moth painting was inspired by an experimental intuitive art/energy healing workshop that I hosted in September. Only my sister and two friends in attendance because they didn't mind my experimenting with [on?] them.  😁

I've been painting intuitively for longer than I can remember but my practice became "intentionally" intuitive just in the past 3–5 years as part of my personal path back to radiant health. 

I've decided to share the process, partly for fun, but also to push myself out of my comfort zone. Turns out it is not easy to put an intuitive practice into words!
So Luna came through while I was stumbling around in the dark... and that seemed like a good thing. 

Electric Box Mural in Ithaca, NY

I was very excited to have my design selected to cover one of seven new electrical boxes commissioned by the Ithaca Arts Council in the spring of 2017. 

 My mural lives at the corner of Court and Tioga streets. 

The image I submitted and eventually painted — was inspired by the global woman's march and resistance movement. During this ugly divisive political climate, I wanted to create something beautiful, spirit-lifting, joyful, and empowering that represents our role as stewards of our planet. Tapping into the energy of the women's march, these are goddesses that look like flames shooting out from the ocean to support each other and the earth!

Grassroots Artbarn

Just returned from the Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance, the high point of my past 10 summers. Many people have been to over 20 of these festivals. Some of our 'roots family travel in from around the country, this year included friends from Connecticut, Arizona, and Hawaii!

I had these three mixed-media pieces in the Grassroots Artbarn exhibition. Two of them, Tree Goddess #1 and #3 sold. One will live in Ithaca and the other in Albany.

There's no red paint in this yet and I'm not sure how much longer I can resist adding it. 

This piece is in progress. Started yesterday and worked on it a little today. Trying to incorporate a daily practice even if it's only 15 minutes.

Where my mind is at with this:
I'm intentionally using art as a means for self therapy and healing.

I approached this with only a fraction of an idea in my mind. It's scary to approach the empty canvas with a shadow of an idea and leap in. But it's exciting to see it evolve. This one will evolve more. 

Technique wise... I continue to do a lot of mixing right on the canvas, allowing the wood to show through and doing my best not to cover up the spontaneity of the strokes while also adding areas of depth and detail.

I still have the four large pieces from a fall art retreat, which need a big time commitment.
This here is an experiment and it requires less time. I think most artists have several projects going on at once, don't you?

This one will be fun to continue to work on for a few days! It needs red!

Thanksgiving or Taking?

Today is Thanksgiving.

And today we have First Americans peacefully protesting unapproved use of their land by a powerful oil company with government puppets and the law on its side. And yet, they are the trespassers. Meanwhile, our president is invisible and makes no statements about the mistreatment of peaceful protestors.

WATER is more important than OIL. 

PEOPLE are more important than MONEY.

There is much to be disgusted with in our country today.

Today I am thankful for the courage of our water protectors.

Unfortunately this is still relevant.  

Recycle Love, Not Hate

It's impossible to make sense of a world where human beings shoot other human beings dead based on differences and prejudice based on those differences. 

We are stuck in a cycle of revenge. 

Hate creates more hate.

How can we not hate someone who kills someone we love based on their hate and revenge toward someone else? Someone else who just happens to have the same skin color, sexual orientation,practices the same religion, or has the same political or employment as our loved one? 

I don't know the answer. 

But I know that hate and revenge are not the answer.

If hate creates more hate, than love creates more love. 

It's time to evolve people. It's time to get stuck in a cycle of love.

But how do we get there from here?

Art in the Heart - Art in the Air - First Friday Gallery Night, July 1

I'm happy to share that I am 1 of 12 artists selected from over 150 submissions to have art printed on banners to be displayed on the Ithaca Commons July through November. Thank you Downtown Ithaca!

Downtown Ithaca's Art in the Heart, now in its 17th year, has added a new component this year, called Art in the Air. 12 vibrant vinyl banners along the newly redesigned Ithaca Commons pedestrian mall, which were selected from over 150 blind submissions from local artists of all walks of life.

Exhibiting artists are: Kathy Armstrong, Patricia Brown, Marika Chew, Shera Delia, Camille Doucet, Dede Hatch, McKayla Macomber, Catherine Montgomery, Stephanie Pierce, Patty Porter, Kadie Salfi, and Carol Spence.

Finding inspiration (and wine) in the Finger Lakes wine country

Hello February...

January was BUSY.
Busy. BUSY. B U S Y.

My partner and my mother had big milestone birthdays. Lot's of fun and excitement.
Now I'm ready to re-focus my energy back to art, where it hasn't been since before the holiday chaos.

Here's a painting made for mom. Her backyard is visited by hummingbirds all summer. The animal totem energy of hummingbird is: heal, joy, happiness, love, timelessness, read more.

Finding quiet time

This time of year, when so many people are celebrating their various holidays, instead of quiet reflection it becomes chaotic and stressful. It's a challenge to carve out quiet time. For artists, that means alone time with a canvas or whatever medium you work in. I started these two pieces (click link to view both) a few weeks ago and I'm still trying to get back! [insert song: I'm working my way back to you babe…]

In the meantime, the creative energy is focused on DIY gifts and treats and trying to stay present in the moment. 

Sweet spot between not enough & too much

Could have called this one done when posted previously here. Sometimes simplicity is elegant and perfect, sometimes it falls flat. Before adding the trees - this one fell flat. Now it's on the edge of being too busy... but I think there's just enough unity and connectedness between the elements to make this one work. 

I like it!

Wind & Fire

Still getting my autumn muse on...I see wind and fire in this one.

OK I will critique myself... this needs more depth. I have some ideas in the works... although I might call this one done.

This is a section of the piece I'm working on right now.
I'm not sure why I like to share my unfinished in-process art. I should only post my perfected completed pieces. But I gave up being a perfectionist years ago when I discovered being a perfectionist doesn't make you perfect. Plus it's not an obtainable goal. Plus is not much fun. Also, I like how incomplete art looks. Sometimes I like it better than completed works. I guess I just relate with being in-between. That's where we all are right now. In-process....

My Art is Getting Stoned

Or maybe my stones are getting art!

I collected these stones from the shores of the Finger Lakes over the summer. Each stone is hand-painted and finished with a UV-resistant clear acrylic coating. Leather straps have adjustable slip-knots.
